Ebony at Patrick Sandberg Antiques
Ebony is a very dense, dark wood that can vary from a dark brown to a black colour. Its species can be found in and around India, Africa and Southeast Asia.
Due to its very close grain and ability to attain a naturally smooth ‘polished’ appearance with minimal preparation, it has been a popular choice for use in the manufacture of decorative items and furniture for many thousands of years.
Although indeed used by late 18th and 19th century English cabinet makers, especially during the Regency era and more so during the Napoleonic wars. Ebony tended to be more favoured by their continental counterparts. These makers often partnered Ebony with more vibrant woods, materials and metals to create a contrasting and more striking effect.
